Section One

“With this ring I thee Wed!”

This comment was the heading of an amusing article, and
was followed by the comment, “Most girls today are wedded to
their mobile phones which give them a ring!!!” Nevertheless, we
are grateful to be able to phone our loved ones who have gone
overseas. You would not be able to do that if Morse had not gone
down on his knees and asked God's guidance for the next step!
But communication is not the only thing you would miss.

You'd miss the faith of the discoverer. Many a benefactor admits
that he or she was aided to success through faith. For example,
Morse (no! not the Inspector! Though sometimes I need faith to
believe his 'Who Dunnits'), says that when he was at his wit’s end
he got down and asked for God's guidance. This led directly to the
invention of the Morse code and later to cables under the oceans
bringing communication between continents and, ultimately, to
invention of the telephone, now described as one of the greatest
steps forward for our modern world and its communications. What
was the first message that Morse sent down the wires? It was:

‘What hath God wrought?'

This book has been written about many new and innovative
ideas and inventions that are directly attributable to the Christian
persuasion of the originators. Much of modern life would be
almost impossible without these contributions - younger people,
particularly, would find life unbelievably dull if devoid of all
modern appliances which they now take for granted. Try to
imagine a life without instant communication, no downloads, no
mobile phones, no iPods or MP3s. Life would, indeed be very
bland. And yet for many, many years none of these things was
available to us.

The advance of modern technology has been a very mixed
blessing. We used to joke that, ‘No news is good news.’ Now, we
hear news, both good and bad, at the flick of a switch or the click
of a button. But has all this improved our quality of life in the way
that some innovators intended? Read on, to be refreshed in spirit
by the uncompromising ideas and faith shown by those mentioned.
